On June 9th, 70 Greenhorn mentees joined Citi volunteers from all around the world to celebrate the 13th Annual Citi Global Community Day, a day where Citi employees, partners, family, and friends dedicate their time, skills, and expertise to make a difference in their communities. Since 2012, Greenhorn has participated in the Global Community Day to bring positive change in its community as well as grow the spirit of volunteering among its members.

This year, Greenhorn partnered with Citi Bank Kenya, Miti Alliance, the YALI network, and the Kenya Forest Service among other partners to plant 5000 trees at the Kereita Forest. The members had a thrilling experience working in teams with colleagues from different organizations to dig holes, move and plant the seedlings across Kereita’s hilly terrain.

To Greenhorn, the tree planting event was so important since it highlighted the significance of bringing positive impact to the society, the mission of the program. Moreover, it gave our mentees a chance to contribute to a purpose greater than them by supporting the 11th Sustainable Development Goal,  to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Furthermore, it presented Greenhorn members a chance to interact with a diverse audience to share ideas and participate in a fun, engaging and impactful exercise.

The Greenhorn community expresses their gratitude for an opportunity to participate in a greater cause that saw them contribute to society, network and have loads of fun while at it! Carolyne Mugo, the President commented that “The iGeneration, as well as Generation Z, are always looking to be part of initiatives that contribute to their wellbeing now and in the near future but also from an unconventional setting. At Greenhorn, this was our little thing, we made it happen!”
